Third Sunday of Advent

Who’s the Boss? was a famous TV show from my childhood and this is the question that our Gospel invites us to consider today.  For we hear that many people from different backgrounds consider Jesus the Boss as they see him as an authority figure.  And so, this raises the question for us, is Jesus the authority aka Boss of our life or is it someone or something else? Are we letting someone have too much control over us or does something in our life have too much power?  Or are we the problem? Are we too self-centered?  Are we the ones calling all the shots and telling Jesus what we will and will not do?  In Advent, we light candles and so this season can be a good time to evaluate who is the boss, the authority in our life and if it is not Jesus then work to make a change so that he can be the guiding light in our life.
And we see that Jesus gives the people who come to him direction on what to do.  And his basic message to all of them is do what is right and share what you have, do what is right and share what you have.  And so again we can ask ourselves are we doing what is right?  Are we living in a way that is consistent with who we are, Christians? And if so great keep doing what you are doing but if not Advent could be a time to reflect on making a change so we are ready for when it comes time for New Year’s resolutions.
And leading up to Christmas we can spend time considering what gifts we should get for certain people in our lives, but do we stop and think how we are sharing what we have the rest of the year, or what we should give to the poor and less fortunate, who are often enough not on our list.  And so maybe during Advent we can take some time to consider what we should share and with who.
And if we are having trouble coming up with answers to these questions, we can look to Jesus Christ our authority as Christians and he can give us his light to guide our way.  And if we do this my brothers and sisters then we will find the joy and peace we hear in the first two reading and that we celebrate on this third Sunday of Advent.
