Reflection for Saturday, December 15, 2018

Saturday of the Week of Advent

SIR 48:1-4, 9-11
PS 8-:2AC AND 3B, 15-16, 18-19
LK 3:4, 6
MT 17:9A, 10-13

Today’s Gospel reading comes just as Jesus and three of his closest disciples are coming down from the mountain where the Transfiguration has just taken place. A pervading theme in the readings for today is that of seeing and recognizing (or not)-- Elijah, John the Baptist, Jesus, the Lord’s face… In this advent season it is good to ask ourselves how well we are seeing God’s face in the people we encounter, how we recognize the prophetic voices in our midst that are calling us to turn back to God. When we see someone on the street asking for food or money, when we see religious leaders at the border demanding justice for asylum seekers, when we see our family members who we disagree with around the holidays, do we recognize the face of God in front of us? Let us pray this advent to allow our eyes to be opened to a new way of seeing, for the ability to recognize God among us.
